What is anxiety ?

Understanding what is anxiety is pivotal for effective control, as it empowers you to identify triggers, develop coping strategies, and cultivate resilience.

Anxiety isn’t just a buzzword or a fleeting feeling; it’s a companion that can shadow every step we take, altering our perceptions and hijacking our thoughts. I know this all too well because, for years, anxiety was my constant companion, dictating my actions and clouding my judgment and understanding what is anxiety was the first step to start breaking free from it.

But what is anxiety? It is an emotion

Yes, it is an emotion.

Well actually It’s more than just feeling nervous before a big presentation or worrying about an upcoming event. Anxiety, despite its emotional essence, can manifest as a complex interplay of emotions, thoughts, and physiological responses. It’s the persistent feeling of unease, the racing thoughts that refuse to quiet down, and the physical sensations that leave us feeling drained and overwhelmed.

But not all anxiety is created equal.

There’s a distinction between Adaptive anxiety, which serves as a natural response to stressors, and Dysfnctional anxiety, which lingers long after the threat has passed, disrupting daily life and causing undue distress.

Understanding Adaptive vs. Dysfunctional Anxiety

Adaptive anxiety helps us navigate challenges and keeps us alert in the face of danger. It’s a survival mechanism wired into our brains, honed by evolution to protect us from harm. This is the healthy anxiety.

However, when anxiety becomes dysfunctional, it morphs into a relentless force that overshadows our every move, leaving us trapped in a cycle of fear and uncertainty.

Constant dysfunctional anxiety feels like being trapped in a never-ending storm, where every thought and action is clouded by a sense of impending doom. It’s exhausting, debilitating, and all-consuming, robbing us of our peace of mind and sense of self.

But how does dysfunctional anxiety start?

It often starts innocuously, triggered by a traumatic event, chronic stress, past neglected emotions, genetic and environmental factors or a combination of all of them . Over time, unchecked anxiety can spiral out of control, snowballing into a pervasive problem that seeps into every aspect of our lives.

Recognizing what is anxiety and the symptoms of dysfunctional anxiety is crucial for seeking help and reclaiming control. While the manifestations may vary from person to person, there are five main symptoms to watch out for.

What are the 5 main anxiety symptoms?

1. Persistent worry and rumination

2. Physical symptoms such as headaches, muscle tension, and stomach issues

3. Irritability and restlessness

4. Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

5. Avoidance behaviors and panic attacks

So, what is the best way to deal with dysfunctional anxiety?

From my personal journey and insights gleaned from neuroscience, I’ve learned that managing anxiety requires a holistic approach that addresses the physical, emotional, and mental aspects of the condition.

  • Physically, activating the lymphatic system through exercise, deep breathing, and relaxation techniques can help release built-up stress hormones and tension from the body.
  • Emotionally, mastering not only worries and fears but also the accompanying emotions of frustration, blame, shame, and anger is essential for fostering resilience and inner peace.
  • Mentally, resetting anxious thoughts and reframing negative patterns will help break free from the grip of anxiety.

However, navigating this journey alone can be overwhelming, which is why seeking the guidance of a specialist in anxiety is crucial for personalized support and guidance.

That’s why I’m offering a complimentary Zoom session where you can connect with someone who can firsthand explain what is anxiety, understands your experience, and offers validation and support. Despite how daunting it may seem, there is a way out of the darkness of anxiety.
