<p>Anxiety can hijack your day, leaving you jittery and out of sorts.</p>



<p>But fear not!</p>



<p>There&#8217;s a powerful technique you can learn in just 5 minutes to calm anxiety and reclaim your calm.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Why am I anxious for no reason?</strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></strong></h2>



<p>Ever been cruising through your day, feeling on top of the world, and then&#8230;bam! A wave of unease washes over you, leaving you feeling jittery and out of sorts. </p>



<p>It&#8217;s like a dark cloud descended out of nowhere, casting a shadow over your sunny disposition. You might even experience a tightness in your chest, palms turning sweaty, and your mind racing with a million &#8220;what-ifs.&#8221;</p>



<p>Sound familiar? This, my friend, is the unwelcome guest we call anxiety. Anxiety can be a real party pooper, hijacking your day with a symphony of physical and emotional chaos. </p>



<p>But before you resign yourself to a life of constant worry, let&#8217;s delve deeper into this phenomenon and understand how it impacts your well-being.</p>



<p>Anxiety, a primal response to perceived threats, can manifest in a myriad of ways, affecting individuals at <strong>mental, emotional, and physical</strong> levels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Science of Anxiety</strong></h2>



<p>Picture this: you&#8217;re the captain of your own fabulous life ship, sailing smoothly across the sea of success. Suddenly, a fierce storm rolls in, rocking your vessel with a vengeance. Your heart starts pounding like a drum solo, your palms get as slick as an oiled-up wrestler, and your mind becomes a whirlwind of frantic thoughts. This, my friend, is your inner alarm system, the &#8220;nervous system,&#8221; freaking out.</p>



<p>This fancy system has two sides:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>a fire alarm (the sympathetic nervous system, or SNS)</li>



<li>and a chill-out zone (the parasympathetic nervous system, or PNS).</li>
</ul>



<p>When the SNS senses danger, it throws you into &#8220;fight-or-flight&#8221; mode, flooding your body with stress hormones like cortisol. This is great for facing down actual tigers, but not so helpful when facing a looming deadline or a grumpy boss.</p>



<p>The constant barrage of stress hormones can wreak havoc on your well-being, like a crew of mischievous monkeys tearing through your ship&#8217;s supplies.</p>



<p>You might experience:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Physical jitters:</strong> Rapid heartbeat, sweaty palms, muscle tension, headaches, fatigue, and even digestive troubles.</li>



<li><strong>Mental mayhem:</strong> Racing thoughts, worry, trouble focusing, feeling irritable, sleepless nights, and even full-blown panic attacks.</li>
</ul>



<p>If left unchecked, this chronic anxiety can turn into a real party pooper, weakening your immune system (making you more susceptible to illness), messing with your memory and focus, putting a strain on your heart, and even leading to bigger problems like depression or social anxiety.</p>

<p>Nighttime often amplifies anxiety due to the lack of distractions and the quiet environment, which allows negative thoughts and worries to surface more prominently. The mind has fewer tasks to focus on, making it easier for stress and anxiety to take over. Additionally, the anticipation of the next day&#8217;s responsibilities can contribute to increased anxiety levels as bedtime approaches.</p>



<p>Moreover, the body&#8217;s circadian rhythm can play a role. The natural decrease in cortisol levels (the stress hormone) at night can paradoxically make anxiety feel more intense. When the mind and body are supposed to be winding down, the discrepancy between the expected state of calm and the heightened state of anxiety can feel more jarring, making it harder to achieve restful sleep, increasing your insomnia levels.</p>

<p>Anxiety and stress can significantly disrupt sleep patterns by triggering the body&#8217;s &#8220;fight or flight&#8221; response, releasing stress hormones like cortisol that make it difficult to relax and fall asleep. This heightened state of alertness can lead to insomnia, frequent awakenings, and non-restorative sleep, leaving you feeling exhausted and more anxious the following day.</p>



<p>Additionally, chronic stress can lead to the development of sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome. Persistent anxiety keeps the nervous system in a constant state of activation, preventing the deep, restorative stages of sleep necessary for physical and mental recovery. </p>



<p>Over time, this can weaken the immune system, reduce cognitive functions such as memory, attention, decision-making, and problem-solving, and exacerbate physical health issues, creating a vicious cycle of stress and poor sleep.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><strong><strong><strong>How Anxiety and Stress Affect Nervous System?</strong></strong></strong></strong></h2>



<p>Anxiety and stress stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body&#8217;s stress response. This activation leads to increased heart rate, muscle tension, and heightened alertness, which are counterproductive to sleep. Chronic stress can also impair the function of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is essential for relaxation and recovery.</p>



<p>Furthermore, prolonged activation of the stress response can lead to dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which controls the release of cortisol. This dysregulation can cause a persistent state of hyperarousal, making it difficult for the body to return to a calm state even when the immediate stressor is no longer present. </p>



<p>Over time, this can contribute to chronic conditions such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and anxiety disorders.</p>

<p>They may overthink, struggle to relax, and experience physical symptoms like fatigue or muscle tension. Despite the internal pressure, they maintain a high level of productivity in the short and mid-term.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>High Functioning Anxiety vs. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)</strong></h2>

<p>While stress and  anxiety medication can certainly help alleviate symptoms, it doesn&#8217;t offer a cure or an effective anxiety or stress treatment. </p>



<p>Anxiety.  It&#8217;s a word that carries a weight that only those who have experienced its suffocating grasp truly understand. </p>



<p>For years, I battled with stress and anxiety, searching for a solution that would bring me lasting relief. Along the way, I encountered countless questions and misconceptions about stress and anxiety medication and its treatments. </p>



<p>Today, I&#8217;m here to shed light on some of those questions and share what I&#8217;ve learned on my journey towards healing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Does anxiety medication cure Stress or Anxiety?</strong></h2>



<p class="has-text-align-left"> This is a question that often comes up in conversations about mental health. While stress and anxiety medication can certainly help alleviate symptoms, it doesn&#8217;t offer a cure. Instead, it provides temporary relief by targeting neurotransmitters in the brain. However, once the effects wear off, the underlying issues remain unresolved. So we can say that medication does not offer an effective stress and anxiety treatment.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Why does anxiety medication only offer temporary relief?</strong></h2>



<p>The answer lies in the complex nature of anxiety. </p>



<p>Stress and Anxiety  are not just a chemical imbalance in the brain; <strong>they&#8217;re a multifaceted issue </strong>that stems from a combination of genetic, physical, emotional, environmental, and psychological factors. Stress and Anxiety Medication may address some of the symptoms, but it doesn&#8217;t address the root cause or provide the necessary tools for long-term management.</p>

<p><strong>Absolutely. </strong></p>

<p>Understanding what is anxiety is pivotal for effective control, as it empowers you to identify triggers, develop coping strategies, and cultivate resilience.</p>



<p>Anxiety isn&#8217;t just a buzzword or a fleeting feeling; it&#8217;s a companion that can shadow every step we take, altering our perceptions and hijacking our thoughts. I know this all too well because, for years, anxiety was my constant companion, dictating my actions and clouding my judgment and understanding what is anxiety was the first step to start breaking free from it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">But what is anxiety?  It is an emotion</h2>



<p class="has-text-align-left">Yes, it is an emotion.</p>



<p class="has-text-align-left">Well actually It&#8217;s more than just feeling nervous before a big presentation or worrying about an upcoming event. Anxiety, despite its emotional essence, can manifest as a complex interplay of emotions, thoughts, and physiological responses. It&#8217;s the persistent feeling of unease, the racing thoughts that refuse to quiet down, and the physical sensations that leave us feeling drained and overwhelmed.</p>



<p>But not all anxiety is created equal. <br><br>There&#8217;s a distinction between <strong>Adaptive anxiety</strong>, which serves as a natural response to stressors, and <strong>Dysfnctional anxiety</strong>, which lingers long after the threat has passed, disrupting daily life and causing undue distress.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Understanding Adaptive vs. Dysfunctional Anxiety</strong></h2>



<p>Adaptive anxiety helps us navigate challenges and keeps us alert in the face of danger. It&#8217;s a survival mechanism wired into our brains, honed by evolution to protect us from harm. This is the healthy anxiety.</p>



<p>However, when anxiety becomes dysfunctional, it morphs into a relentless force that overshadows our every move, leaving us trapped in a cycle of fear and uncertainty.</p>



<p>Constant dysfunctional anxiety feels like being trapped in a never-ending storm, where every thought and action is clouded by a sense of impending doom. It&#8217;s exhausting, debilitating, and all-consuming, robbing us of our peace of mind and sense of self.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>But how does dysfunctional anxiety start?</strong></h3>



<p>It often starts innocuously, triggered by a traumatic event, chronic stress, past neglected emotions, genetic and environmental factors or a combination of all of them . Over time, unchecked anxiety can spiral out of control, snowballing into a pervasive problem that seeps into every aspect of our lives.</p>



<p>Recognizing what is anxiety and the symptoms of dysfunctional anxiety is crucial for seeking help and reclaiming control. While the manifestations may vary from person to person, there are five main symptoms to watch out for.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-left">Firstly, remember you&#8217;re not alone. Feeling like you&#8217;re getting in your own way is incredibly common when anxiety is around. Anxiety whispers fears, fuels doubts, and pushes us away from anything that might &#8220;prove&#8221; those fears true.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Unexpected Sign You Might Have Anxiety: Self-Sabotag</strong>e</h2>



<p>Why do we do it?</p>

<li><strong>Protection Mechanism</strong>: It can feel safer to stay stagnant than risk failure or judgment, even if it means staying stuck.</li>



<li><strong>Fear of the Unknown:</strong> Stepping outside our comfort zone – even for positive change – can trigger anxiety&#8217;s alarm bells.</li>



<li><strong>Negative Self-Talk</strong>: That inner critic thrives on our insecurities, whispering &#8220;you can&#8217;t do it&#8221; or &#8220;you&#8217;re not good enough.&#8221;</li>

<p>They are coping mechanisms you have learned along your life, not personal flaws.</p>



<p>So to start moving forward start by:</p>

<li><strong>Acknowledge</strong>: Notice these patterns without judgment. Write them down, track them, and see if you can identify triggers.</li>



<li><strong>Challenge</strong>: When you catch yourself sabotaging, challenge the underlying thoughts and fears with logic and objective data and self-compassion.</li>



<li><strong>Celebrate small wins</strong>: Every step towards healthier behaviors is a victory! Recognize and reward your progress, no matter how small.</li>



<li><strong>Seek support:</strong> You don&#8217;t have to do this alone. Talk to a specialist in anxiety lo learn to manage it and how to stop your self-sabotage so you can feel better.</li>
